PJM: Tight conditions earlier this month; fall maintenance season keeps margins thin

  • 5CP Capacity Tags: The 5CP window has closed for the season, so peak-tag exposure is not a driver today. Oct. 13-14 forecasts of roughly 112,400 MW and 113,300 MW, with about 61,000 MW of generation on outage, show how little room fall maintenance leaves (PJM Inside Lines).
  • Real-Time LMP: No hub-level price data for the last 24 hours was available from approved sources. PJM recalled non-firm sales to neighbors during the Oct. 13-14 alert, which tends to tighten regional supply.
  • Demand Response: PJM called a Pre-Emergency Load Management Action for Oct. 13 and 14 covering the afternoon peak and the evening net-load peak. A DOE 202(c) emergency order was effective Oct. 13-16. Separately, FERC on Oct. 15 accepted in part and rejected in part PJM’s Order 2023 interconnection compliance filing and directed further filings (FERC).

NYISO: Quiet operations with one real-time pricing notice

  • ICAP Tag Tracking: No UCAP tag changes or ICAP auction results surfaced in approved sources today.
  • CBEP Program Alerts: No CBEP alerts or activations posted.
  • Day-Ahead Pricing: NYISO reserved hour-beginning 12 through 23 in the Oct. 19 Real-Time Market for Energy, Regulation and Operating Reserves, and confirmed Oct. 21 Day-Ahead prices are correct. It also disabled 15-minute scheduling on several interfaces on Oct. 20 (NYISO Operational Announcements).

ERCOT: Off-peak season, no alerts identified

  • 4CP Season Tracking: The 4CP window (June to September) has ended. Nothing to track until next summer.
  • ORDC Pricing: No ORDC adder or reserve shortfall reports found in approved sources.
  • Grid Condition Alerts: The ERCOT grid conditions dashboard did not load live data for this run, and no Weather Watch, Watch, Warning, Emergency or Conservation notices surfaced (ERCOT).

ISO-NE: Transmission outages and thin fall operable margins

  • FCM Tag Events: FCA 19 was delayed two years under a FERC-accepted filing. Qualification determinations are due Oct. 16 and qualified capacities are finalized Nov. 2. No ICR will be set for CCP 19 until the CAR project is complete (ISO-NE October report).
  • Capacity Market Integration: Phase II has zero transfer capability from Oct. 7 to Nov. 2. Cross Sound Cable is out Oct. 19-31, and NECEC is out Nov. 5-17.
  • Load Forecasting: The tightest fall week is the one beginning Nov. 7, with a CSO-basis operable margin of about -309 MW at 50/50 load and -1,147 MW at 90/10. Winter 2026/27 is tighter, at about -810 MW (50/50) and -2,595 MW (90/10) in the week of Jan. 9. September hub RT LMP averaged $39.51/MWh.

MISO: No new signals; capacity prices well below last year

  • Zonal Pricing: No notable zonal spreads or constraint reports found in approved sources today.
  • Planning Resource Auction: The 2026-27 PRA cleared at $116 to $126/MW-day annualized across all 10 zones, down from $212 to $217 last year. Summer prices were $424.30 (North and Central) versus $666.50 last year, and no Zone 4 shortfall was reported (Utility Dive).
  • Real-Time Settlements: Nothing unusual reported. FERC granted Lost Island Wind a 24-month commercial operation extension under the MISO tariff.

CAISO: Fire-weather shutoffs follow early October heat wave

  • Flex Alerts: No Flex Alerts in 2026 per CAISO’s emergency history. Restricted Maintenance Operations were issued in early October as demand peaked near 46,000 MW on Oct. 5 (Utility Dive).
  • Renewable Curtailment: No curtailment volume data surfaced for today.
  • NQC Integration: PG&E warned of planned shutoffs across more than two dozen counties from Oct. 14 through Oct. 17 on offshore winds. FERC conditionally accepted Deseret G&T market-based rate revisions to participate in CAISO’s EDAM (FERC).

Cross-Market Watch

  • Weather and Fuel: Unseasonable warmth is compressing the fall maintenance window in PJM and the West, and operable margins are thin heading into November.
  • Regulatory: FERC ordered mandatory NERC reliability standards for data center and other computational loads, and the NERC ballot has passed and moves to board review (POWER). FERC also accepted NERC’s 2027 budget on Oct. 15.

HOW INTELLASTAR ENERGY ANALYST CAN HELP

Today’s conditions create specific opportunities — and risks — for your organization.

PJM — Watch

Recent demand response calls show how fast PJM can tighten when fall outages and warm weather overlap.

Intellastar Energy Analyst tracks PJM alerts and load management events so your team sees them as they happen. It also helps you check how your curtailment plan and enrollment would have performed in the Oct. 13-14 events.

ISO-NE — Watch

Negative operable margins projected for November and winter put New England capacity exposure in focus.

Intellastar Energy Analyst follows ISO-NE load forecasts and capacity milestones, including the delayed FCA 19. It helps you plan for tight weeks before they arrive.
